Frequently Asked Questions
Will treatment hurt?
Generally, a chiropractic treatment does not hurt although you may
experience some minor discomfort which quickly passes for most patients.
You will normally find that follow-up treatments are much more pleasant
and as symptoms improve.
Are there risks?
Chiropractic has fewer risks than many other treatments for your problem.
Serious side effects are uncommon.
Why use X-rays?
Decisions to take X-rays will be made in consultation with you. At all times,
the Chiropractor weighs up the risks against the benefits. X-rays help in the
diagnose of recent injuries, older patients whose bone structure may have
altered over time, history of serious diseases and unusual examination
findings.
What's wrong with taking painkillers?
These can dull your pain, but it may well return as they do not necessarily
deal with the cause. They may also have side effects.
What if its something serious?
If your Chiropractor feels that Chiropractic treatment is not appropriate for
the cause of your headaches, you will be referred to your GP or to a suitable
specialist.
How safe is it to adjust the neck?
Statistics show that about 66-69% of visits to a Chiropractor include neck
(cervical) adjustments. Recent publications suggest that chiropractic
treatment is extremely safe when carried out by a skilled individual.
How can one prevent sports injuries?
This depends on the individual problem but generally many sports injuries
occur through poor approach to sport. It is vitally important that you warm up
before you start and stretch when you have finished. If you have not been
active for some time, your body becomes less fit and supple making injury
more prone.
Is Chiropractic good for babies?
Yes. Some Chiropractors treat mothers and babies as an area of specialisation.
How often should check-ups be given?
Chiropractors may recommend a check-up every two to six months depending
on the original complaint and patient lifestyle.
The Chiropractor may wish to treat you more frequently under 'wellness care'
as well as exploring further ways to your wellbeing.
Is too much chiropractic a bad thing?
Your case will be assessed on an individual basis, however, no-one should be
dependent on any one treatment. Chiropractors are trained and qualified to
diagnose problems, evaluate when its appropriate to give treatment and, in
particular, when not to.
